Mt. Desert Narrows

Video

Description

The flat is almost entirely covered in rocks and seaweed. Many small rocks cover the surface with occasional larger rocks and the numerous piles of seaweed. The mud is light brown on top and gray underneath, and as the clammer scrapes through it there is the sound of rocks tumbling over each other. His pace is moderate, and he tends to lead the digging with his right hand and move his left between balancing the hoe and raking through the turned mud. He digs up the shore away from the water, and when he reaches the edge of the hole he’ll sometimes stand up, move his hod forward, and then use the hoe in his right hand to scrape the surface before digging in. Clams tend to stick in clumps of mud when he turns it over. He picks these clams off the clumps and tosses them into the hod with an audible plunk before continuing. The camera points fairly low, the bottom of the frame cutting off just above his mid-thighs that are covered by light brown shorts. The grate of the hoe between the rocks and the mud creates a sandy scraping sound, even as a boat or plane can be heard humming in the distance and low voices from observers mumble out of frame.
